ITIN Application Processing

Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain, a Social Security Number (SSN). It is a nine-digit number used strictly for tax processing and reporting compliance. Obtaining an ITIN allows foreign nationals, non-residents, and their families to fulfill U.S. tax filing obligations, receive legally entitled tax credits or refunds, open bank accounts, and establish credit or business structures in the United States.

Application and Eligibility:

Form W-7 is used to submit the application for an ITIN alongside a complete federal tax return. The following individuals are required or eligible to apply for an ITIN to meet U.S. tax compliance:

1-Non-resident aliens who are required to file a U.S. tax return or claim a U.S. tax benefit.

2-Resident aliens (based on days present in the U.S.) who do not qualify for a Social Security Number.

3-Dependents or spouses of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who are being claimed on a federal tax return.

4-Dependents or spouses of non-resident alien visa holders who need to file tax returns.

5-Foreign investors, non-resident business owners, and foreign independent contractors earning U.S.-sourced income.

Acceptable Identification and Documentation:

To obtain an ITIN, applicants must provide acceptable documentation proving identity and foreign status:

1-A valid, unexpired Passport (serves as stand-alone proof of identity and foreign status).

2-National Identification Card, Foreign Driver’s License, foreign birth certificate, or U.S. visa/USCIS photo ID.

3-Medical or school records for dependent applicants under 14 years of age.
An ITIN remains valid unless it hasn't been used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three consecutive years. Additionally, the IRS periodically expires older ITINs. If your ITIN has expired, Syed Professional Services can assist you with renewing it alongside your current tax return filing.
The IRS does not charge an official government filing fee for issuing an ITIN. However, professional preparation and tax return filing fees depend on your specific tax situation, the complexity of your return, and document certification requirements. Anyone required to file a U.S. federal tax return or be listed as a dependent/spouse who is ineligible for a Social Security Number can apply. This includes non-resident aliens, resident aliens, foreign entrepreneurs opening U.S. businesses, and dependents residing in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico.
